Rippling vs HourSquare: a quote-priced workforce platform against a self-serve HRIS
Rippling wins if you want HR, payroll, IT and finance on one employee record, have a US-heavy workforce, and are prepared to buy through a sales process at a price agreed in a quote. HourSquare wins for a team that wants to sign up, configure the product itself and know the price in advance: free for now, with every module. Rippling has recruiting, performance reviews, learning, IT device management and a broader public API than HourSquare's; HourSquare has no quote to wait for, self-serve setup, documented EU hosting, and no base fee or module-by-module charges.
Who this is for: Teams that use a fraction of Rippling's modules, do not need its IT or finance products, and want a free start instead of a quote with a base fee.

Where it tends to fall short for our typical buyer
Quote-based pricing with a base fee; third parties report typical spend of USD 20-35/employee/month once modules are added Sales-led buying; no free tier or trial found Third parties flag contract lock-in and minimum seat requirements on some modules Native payroll outside the US covers only a handful of countries Hosting region and GDPR posture not confirmed in sources reviewed

What Rippling costs
Rippling does not publish a price list; rippling.com/pricing returned a 403 when we tried to read it, and third-party guides state that official tier prices are not published. The same guides report a starting point of USD 8 per employee per month plus a USD 35 monthly base fee, modules quoted separately, typical spend of USD 20 to 35 per employee per month once modules are added, annual billing saving roughly 20%, and contract lock-in and minimum seat requirements on some modules. We found no free plan or trial, and buying requires a demo. Treat every figure here as third-party reported; Rippling's own quote is the only reliable number. HourSquare is free for now, with every module and no base fee.
Where Rippling is stronger
- Module range: HR, payroll, time, scheduling, recruiting, performance, surveys, learning, IT device management and finance on one record.
- A native applicant tracking system and performance reviews with calibrations and compensation; HourSquare has neither.
- US payroll plus natively built payroll in 10 further countries, the ability to pay workers in 185+ countries, and EOR in 80. HourSquare ships tax packs for 24+ countries and has no EOR.
- A broad public API. HourSquare's public API covers time clocks, employees and time entries, plus calendar feeds and exports.
- Review volume: 4.9 on Capterra from 4,867 reviews.
Where HourSquare is stronger for a self-serve team
- Free for now, with no base fee, no per-module charges, no minimum seats and no annual commitment.
- Self-serve signup and setup instead of a demo, a quote and a sales-led implementation.
- Documented EU hosting with GDPR-native export and deletion; Rippling's hosting region was not confirmed in the sources we reviewed.
- An anonymous whistleblowing channel with two-way conversation, which we could not find in Rippling's line-up.
- Self-serve from day one, so nothing in the product assumes an IT department or a finance team.
Moving from Rippling
There is no automated migration. Export your employee data, documents and time-off balances from Rippling, then set up HourSquare yourself. Reporting lines, leave policies and onboarding templates are re-created in HourSquare. Check your Rippling contract for term and minimum-seat commitments before you switch, since third parties report both. If you use Rippling for device management or corporate cards, you will need another tool for those; HourSquare does not cover IT or finance. If you later leave HourSquare, you can export the employee list and reports as CSV or Excel, and each person's data, from the product.
How to decide
- Get the Rippling quote in writing, including the base fee, each module and the contract term, and compare the total with HourSquare, which is free for now.
- List the modules you would actually use. If IT device management, corporate finance, recruiting or performance reviews are on the list, Rippling has them and HourSquare does not.
- Check your payroll countries. Rippling's native payroll is the US plus 10 countries; HourSquare's tax packs cover 24+.
- Decide whether documented EU hosting matters. HourSquare states it; Rippling's region was not confirmed in our sources.
- Decide how you want to buy: a demo and a quote, or signing up and setting it up yourself.
