How the deductions stack up
Income Tax
The first £12,570 you earn is the Personal Allowance — tax-free. After that, 20% applies up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140, and 45% on anything higher. Only the slice of income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate, so a pay rise never drops your whole salary into a higher bracket.
National Insurance
Employees pay 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% on everything above £50,270. Unlike Income Tax, NI is worked out on each pay period rather than cumulatively across the year — this tool annualises it, which matches a steady monthly salary.
The £100k cliff edge
Earn over £100,000 and your Personal Allowance starts vanishing — £1 gone for every £2 over the line, until it's wiped out at £125,140. Combined with 40% tax, every pound in that stretch is effectively taxed at around 60%. Pension contributions are the usual escape hatch. Punch in £110,000 to see it.
What it costs your employer
Your salary isn't the whole bill. On top of gross pay, an employer owes 15% National Insurance on everything above £5,000 a year. A £35,000 hire costs the business closer to £39,500 once that's added — useful to know whether you're budgeting headcount or negotiating a raise.
